Susan Smallheer recently reported that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has asked Vermont Yankee for more documents.
Saying Entergy Corp. “is under no legal obligation” to shut down the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has asked Entergy for additional information before granting its request that it be exempted from costly studies and safety improvements…Pickett said Entergy had already notified the NRC on Nov. 22 that it would not spend resources to perform the required post-Fukushima analysis for hardened vents, as well as prepare its overall post-Fukushima plan.
Entergy has decided that it will not do upgrades required by other nuclear reactors, because it is going to shut down, but it is not going to shut down now. Other reactors are upgrading. And so the game of nuclear roulette continues, as the industry continues to take the chances for profit, and the neighborhood continues to be exposed to an aging reactor. It is the usual game of stalling.
